Camille Paglia resparks a passion!

Am joyfully stunned to discover that iconoclast Camille Paglia shares my passion for Native American culture.  As in what came before, thousands of years before, the arrival of Europeans on the continent's shores.

My passion was triggered back in 2010, when it hit me that the tribes scattered from coast to coast were most probably remnants of what my birth faith describes as the Ancient Church.  Sort of a hoot that some folks at one time proposed they were the lost tribes of israel.  Needed to go back one more church!

Camille's interest is in Native American culture around the end of the last Ice Age, as the glaciers withdrew.  Sounds about right for me, too.  Not that we'll ever learn much.  So much of the evidence was destroyed - willfully & unintentionally - by European settlers.

My brain is so buzzed by her talk of "odd clusterings of boulders" that she found in heavily wooded areas not far from Philadelphia (as in PA; not to be confused with the Nanih Waiya Mound and Village outside Philadelphia, MS).

Camille noticed what looked like man-made cairns, piles of stones that seemed to intentionally deigned & created to be just piles of stones tossed up by farmers clearing fields.  They reminded her of "ritual space" she'd seen in her studies of European pre-historic art.  Then, she began coming across "imposing, smoothly planed standing stones (up to seven feet high)."  Almost all of them were toppled over long ago, many found in underbrush, partially buried.  Considering where they were placed throughout the Delaware River basin, she concludes  - as would I - that they were once part of the Native American cosmology.

Goose bumps!  Speak to me, Camille!

Researching her passion reconnected me with when I stumbled across my own.  Was preparing course work for teaching the early history of our continent to at-risk high school students.  I only note that they were at-risk because I had far more leeway in what I taught them than would have been the case in a standard high school.  Instead of using a textbook, my courses were marked by a trail of mini-lectures & specialty units, designed to grab & go their attention.

Perhaps it is faulty memory, but I don't recall getting much information at all in any of my schooling about the people who were here when our own earliest ancestors arrived settled secured the land as their own.

It never hit me that people had been living on the continent for thousands of years, yet what Europeans found on landing seemed to them untouched by mankind. An experience & attitude that, unfortunately, helped them foster nurture embrace an image of the original inhabitants as less than human, something they could treat far worse than the most mangy dog.

Thanks, Camille, for resparking this passion!  Instead of fixating on an election that represents the worst of times, am going to ponder the unknown, sadly now probably unknowable, history of the people who roamed the hills & fields where I live, who sought to protest & preserve the earth.  In many ways, we are, at this moment in time, the sorry nadir of the disdainful dismissive destructive mindset that sought dominion over stewardship, subjection over collaboration.  And always always always in the name of a greater good.

Oh, the joy of lifting my eyes from whatever unfolds over the coming five months & pondering the ties I see from the scant study I've done between a culture that was crushed & brushed away with an ancient wisdom far superior to what we have in this here & now.

Camille - mega mega mega thanks!  You've saved me from Election 2016.

Why start with a TEDxBAWomen?

Image result for tedwomen

Why not make my first stab at bringing local TED events to my little hometown one that includes men, that isn't focused on women?

Two reasons for starting with TEDxBAWomen come to mind:
  • My ideal first would be TED2016.  It's theme - DREAM - is goose bumpy perfect for my interests & purpose.  Alas, it happened back in February.
  • It's easier for me to organize a female-centric event.  Start with what's easiest for me to do.  And maybe be the inspiration for others to grow it to an all-inclusive level.

Christina Orthwein's pottery classes are legendary.  More than jaw-dropping clay pieces are formed on her wheel - I keep getting glimpses of what happens when she gathers together her classes & welcomes potters to her open studios.  The pieces are stunning, but it feels like they are means to a deeper end.  At least, that's what her devoted students & open studio artists say.  I want to hear more!

When Danielle & Erik Odhner introduced a farm market to my little hometown, it had a short 6-week season, which was manageable, gave all of us a taste of their dream, created a desire for more. The next year - & the next & the next - Bryn Athyn Bounty Farm Market went from six weeks to six months.  Today, new possibilities in small-scale agriculture are opening, with Bryn Athyn College taking tiny steps working with Delaware Valley University to possibly develop a program that would richly benefit students at both schools. Small first steps, four years ago & today, can lead to amazing leaps.

I have vivid memories of looking at the half-empty display case at Be Well Bakery & Cafe, thinking, "Someday, this will be filled with fabulous food."  Today it is, the room overflows out to sidewalk seating, the remarkable staff flits all over with platters of food & always present smiles - and work is moving along briskly in the new space they expect to move into next month, just one door down from where they're currently tucked away.  Adriann Glunz is more than a successful entrepreneur - she & husband Ryan are committed to helping their young staff dream pursue achieve BIG goals.  Like Christina's pottery wheel & Bryn Athyn Bounty Farm Market, Be Well is more than a dream realized - it is an open door to much more.

Those are just a few of the women I long to hear share their stories.  There are so many, in my little hometown, next door in Huntingdon Valley.  They need a venue, a microphone, an audience.  They need me.

Start with a small step.  TEDxBrynAthynWomen, held at the same time as TEDWomen in October, out in San Francisco.  Mix streamed events from the West Coast with live presentations here on the East.

To build their success, Christina, Danielle & Adriann started took small, manageable steps & showcased exceptional products & experiences.  They are among my dream speakers.  If they aren't available, BA & HV offers a deep well of possibilities.

For years, have dreamed of the Academy schools having their own TEDish talks, featuring students alumni faculty.  Was never able to light a fire, to inspire anyone to take it on.  Now that I've discovered how relatively easy it is to actually put on an actual TEDx event, my own brain is fired up with all the possibilities that I can help make happen!

Why start with TEDxBAWomen instead of TEDxAcademySchools  Because it's within my realm of possibility.

Because it's manageable.

Because it showcases exceptional speakers on inspiring subjects creating unforgettable moments.

Because it hooks into an actual mega TED event, one that we can experience real time live stream.

Because I am committed to spreading ideas about building remarkable moments into everyone's daily life.

Because this seems the best place to start.

Because it is the most accessible small step that can lead to unimaginable giant leaps.

Because we must dream big to achieve greatly...

TEDxBrynAthynWomen

It's not my destiny to attend TedWomen 2016, this October in San Francisco.

My destiny is even more important, connected to my deepest loves - - arranging a related TedWomen event in my little hometown. One that combines watching live feed of the event out in my beloved City By The Bay -and- local speakers on issues of importance to women of all ages.

Imagining Christina Orthwein doing a presentation on the empowerment of a potter's wheel.

Or Danielle Odhner, talking about restoring agriculture to our wee small boro.

Or Adriann Glunz on making dreams into realities, over & over.

Or Gail Simons on being cultivating within & between communities.

Or Nina Finkleday on developing a community resting spot.

Or Becky Cooper dropping down from Kempton to discuss creativity, the arts, and the power of children's theater.

Or Aline Brown on the WHY behind extreme sports.  Or, for that matter, whoever is behind the phenom that is GFit Women.

Live speakers, live stream events, long conversations & unimaginable inspiration.

This is no small wish.  This means finding space, finding sponsors & speakers & people to do the audio & lighting & recording.

And this has got to be done.  It feels like on some level it already has been, is waiting, none too patiently, to be drawn into the NOW.

Gotta go.  Things to do, dreams to make real.

old habits die hard

In my case, "die" is certainly the key word.

Since forever, my way of responding to emotional stress with people I love is to lash out self-destructively.

This never dawned on me until marrying John.  One time, I was torn up by some emotional crisis with him, went upstairs & threw all the clothes out of one side of the master bedroom closet.  John came up, found me frazzed by the exertion - lot of clothes - standing in the closet doorway.

Now, John is not one for beating anyone over the head with judgment.  His style is more to let the other person come to a realization on his - my - own.

He looked at me in the doorway, panting with the effort, looked at the clothes piled in a heap on the floor.

"You're upset at me, aren't you?" he asked.

"YES!!!"

"You're upset at me," he repeated.

"YES!!!!!!"

At which point he looked me full in the eyes, with a loving, tender look, and asked, "So, why did you throw all of your clothes out of the closet."

I remember being initially dumbfounded - didn't it make sense.  Then, without him saying anything else, saw the whole picture.  When I got upset at him, I lashed out at me.

Same thing happened when Mim did something emotionally devasting.  John came upstairs to find me crumpling my precious collection of New Yorker cartoons, clipped out over years.  He comforted me, waited for me to move on, then gathered up the balled up wads of paper & later ironed them out.

Realized this a.m. that I am back to my own self-punishing ways.  Woke up to labored breathing, tingling head.

It's been a difficult month in our relationship.  My guess is we've gotten to a point where we can look at tough issues that were too delicate before for a penetrating gaze, but acknowledging & trying to work on them - not an easy thing - has been tough.  And I have taken it out on myself.  This time with my diet.  Prime rib, french dip sandwich, bbq spareribs, hamburger & a Bahama Mama hot dog.  Not on consecutive days, but within the past few weeks.

Old habits die hard, but giving into this one could kill me.  Just a little stupid eating & my blood pressure zoomed back up.

There is so much right in my life, so little to cause stress, yet the little can seem so oversized - illusion, but a darned effective one.

Let the love in.  It's real.  Everything else is illusion.  Dangerous, but illusion.  Look out in around to the light.
